Philanthropic Landscape Restoration
Sunkoshi Basin, Nepal
The Sunkoshi Basin Restoration Project (SBRP) is a 257,770+ hectare (ha) forest restoration initiative in the Midhills region of Nepal. The holistic restoration program is a coordinated effort to build capacity and improve equity within Community Forest User Groups as they develop and implement management plans that improve outcomes for biodiversity and livelihoods.

Project Overview
Why We Are Partnering to Restore Sunkoshi Basin in Nepal
Nepal’s Community Forestry program has changed the trajectory of forest cover in Nepal, but outcomes for biodiversity and livelihoods are inconsistent.
Restoration in this area will improve biodiversity outcomes and equity in community forest management while creating co-benefits for natural disaster risk reduction and livelihoods.
Our Approach
We collaborate directly with Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs) in the Sunkoshi Basin to provide technical support to support reforestation and forest management. Collectively, CFUGs will contribute to landscape-scale improvements in forest quality throughout the Sunkoshi Basin.
Our approach to landscape restoration in this region includes:
- Planting trees and reforesting an estimated 30,000 hectares of land, improving local biodiversity and forest connectivity
- Biodiversity monitoring
- Alternative livelihood opportunities that reduce pressure on forest resources, including employment in our holistic restoration initiatives and agroforestry programs with farmer groups and cooperatives
- Technical support to community forest user groups management plan development and implementation
- Forest fire awareness and mitigation activities, including firefighting and prevention
- Disaster risk assessment and mitigation
- Non-timber value chain development to generate long-term funding for community forest management
Landscape Restoration Progress
Since 2015, Eden has partnered with Community Forest User Groups in the area of interest to restore degraded land and support agroforestry initiatives. This work has brought over 2,000 hectares of land under landscape restoration, and improved the implementation of 7 CFUG management plans.
ANTICIPATED IMPACT
Strengthening the Resilience of People and the Planet
Through collaboration with Community Forest User Groups to restore degraded forests in the Sunkoshi Basin, we will support improved outcomes for biodiversity, disaster risk reduction, and improved ecosystem function. Over the next 15 years, Eden’s anticipates substantial benefits for people and planet, including:
- Restoration of degraded forest, improving biodiversity and landscape connectivity for wildlife and critical ecosystem functions.
- Improved household income for rural mountain communities, reducing dependence on forest resources through agroforestry and climate-smart agriculture approaches.
- Increased technical capacity within community forest user groups to sustainably manage community forest land for multiple goals.
- Enhanced participation and support for women in natural resource decision-making.
- Reduced frequency of forest fires.
- Improved disaster resilience for rural communities.
- Sustainable income sources for CFUGs to support long-term management of community forests.
